New Ulm 6, Fairmont 1
NEW ULM — New Ulm defeated Fairmont 6-1 on Monday in a Big South Conference tennis meet at New Ulm High School.
Fairmont’s No. 1 doubles team of Carter Quist and Dominick Lund-May picked up the lone win for the Cardinals, defeating Joey Kotten and Daniel Brownfield 7-6 (12-10), 6-4.
At No. 1 singles, Mav Johnson defeated Anthony Stegge 6-0, 6-3, while Charlie Weidman defeated Tyler Siama 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles. Gideon Heins defeated Sebastian Castro 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles, while Ian Schotzko defeated Wylee Fredericksen 6-0, 6-3.
Aaron Black and Ethan Neet defeated Oliver Thedens and Simoné Castro 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 doubles, while Isaac Dittmer and Eli Dorschner defeated Lilly Ortega and Leon Yang 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 doubles.
PREP SOFTBALL
New Ulm 4, Mankato East 2 (10 innings)
MANKATO — Lauren Schmiesing’s 10th-inning home run put New Ulm over Mankato East 4-2 in a nonconference softball game Monday.
Ramsey Hopp got the win for New Ulm, pitching all 10 innings and striking out 13 while allowing five hits and no earned runs. Kenzie Enter was 2 for 4 with two RBIs and a stolen base, while Berkley Wilfahrt was 1 for 4 with a run and a stolen base. Maddie Backer added a hit with a run scored and two stolen bases.
New Ulm (4-0) travels to Waseca on Tuesday.
Madelia 29, GE/AC 5 (4 innings)
GLENVILLE — Madelia rolled Glenville-Emmons/Alden-Conger 29-5 in four innings Monday in a Valley Conference softball game.
The game was called after four innings due to the 15-run lead rule.
Corban Tatro got the win for the Blackhawks, striking out nine while allowing one hit and four unearned runs in three innings. Makayla Sorenson was 2 for 5 with four RBIs and four runs scored, while Alicia Lugo was 2 for 4 with four RBIs and two runs scored. Kellie Koberoski was 1 for 2 with three RBIs and three runs scored.
Madelia travels to Nicollet on Tuesday.
Cathedral 9, Springfield 3
SPRINGFIELD — New Ulm Cathedral defeated Springfield 9-3 Monday in a Tomahawk Conference softball game.
Abbey Hillesheim got the win for Cathedral, striking out three while allowing five hits and three earned runs in six innings. Kiah Helget was 3 for 4 with a homerun, two RBIs and two runs scored, while Madelyn Haala had a homerun and three RBIs. Alexa Hornick and Ava Schmid added a hit and an RBI each.
Jalivia Richert took the loss for Springfield, striking out eight while allowing six hits and nine earned runs. Brooklyn Sturm was 2 for 4, while Makay Winkelmann was 1 for 3 with 2 RBIs. Regan Beadell had a double and an RBI.
Cathedral travels to Wabasso on Thursday. Springfield hosts Minnesota Valley Lutheran on Thursday.
Sleepy Eye 13, MVL 1 (5 innings)
Sleepy Eye 7, St. Clair 0
SLEEPY EYE — Sleepy Eye swept a split double header against Minnesota Valley Lutheran and St. Clair, defeating the Chargers 13-1 in five innings and St. Clair 7-0.
Game 1 was called after five innings due to the 10-run lead rule.
Taylor Berkner got the win for the Indians in Game 1, recording 10 strikeouts while allowing two hits and one run in four innings. Berkner was also 3 for 3 at the plate with three RBIs and three runs scored, while Katelyn Tauer was 2 for 2 with two runs scored. Callie Evers had a double with two RBIs, while Jaelynn Schauman had a hit, an RBI and two runs scored.
Katlyn Stadick pitched the complete game for MVL, allowing nine hits and eight earned runs. Karlee Prahl had a triple and a stolen base, while Taylor Gunderson had the team’s other hit. Kenna Dressel had a walk, a stolen base and a run scored.
In Game 2, Tauer go the win, striking out 10 while allowing one hit. Berkner was 2 for 4 with a run and two RBIs, while Katelyn Tauer had a hit and two RBIs. Callie Evers had an RBI double and a run scored.
Sleepy Eye (4-3) will play Red Rock Central Tuesday at Walnut Grove. MVL travels to Springfield on Thursday.
Wabasso 7, St. Mary’s 5
WABASSO — Wabasso took down Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s 7-5 Monday in a Tomahawk Conference softball game.
Avery Carlson got the win for Wabasso, striking out nine while allowing seven hits and two earned runs in seven innings. Carlson was also 3 for 3 with three RBIs, while Lyla Kittelson had a home run with two RBIs.
Taylor Mathiowetz took the loss for the Knights, striking out four while allowing seven runs on six hits. Josie Helget was 3 for 4 with a triple and an RBI, while Jasmine Peterson was 2 for 4 with two RBIs.
Wabasso travels to New Ulm Cathedral on Thursday, while St. Mary’s hosts GFW on Thursday.
MLA 12, Nicollet 9
MOUNTAIN LAKE — Mountain Lake Area held off Nicollet 12-9 on Monday in a nonconference softball game.
Nicollet was led by Leah Bode, who was 2 for 3 with two doubles, four RBIs and two runs scored, while Jazmyn Goettlicher was 2 for 3 with a double and two RBIs.
Bode also pitched and took the loss in seven innings, giving up 10 hits and six walks for nine earned runs while striking out nine.
Nicollet (2-4) is scheduled to host Madelia in Valley Conference action at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.
PREP BASEBALL
New Ulm 3, Waseca 2
WASECA — New Ulm took a 3-2 victory over Waseca Monday in a Big South Conference baseball game.
Tanner Backer got the win for the Eagles, striking out five while allowing two hits and one earned run in five innings. Ayden Jensen was 2 for 3 with two RBIs and a run scored, while Luke Suess was 1 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored.
New Ulm travels to St. Peter on Thursday.
St. Mary’s 6, Wabasso 3
SLEEPY EYE — Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s defeated Wabasso 6-3 in a Tomahawk Conference baseball game on Monday.
Talan Helget got the win for the Knights, striking out eight while allowing two hits and two earned runs in four innings. Brandon Schmitz got the save, striking out five while not allowing a hit or a walk in three innings. At the plate for St. Mary’s, Schmitz was 2 for 4 with an RBI and two runs scored, while Jon Petermann was 2 for 4 with two runs scored. George Schwint was 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored.
Ethan Jenniges took the loss for the Rabbits, striking out three while allowing nine hits and three earned runs in five innings pitched. Noah Anderson and Preston Remiger each had a hit and an RBI for Wabasso.
St. Mary’s travels to Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop on Thursday. Wabasso travels to New Ulm Cathedral on Thursday.
GFW 11, BLHS 1 (6 innings)
FAIRFAX — Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop rolled Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart 11-1 in six innings Monday in a Tomahawk Conference baseball game.
The game was called after six innings due to the 10-run lead rule.
Dominic Rose got the win for GFW, striking out 10 while allowing two hits and one earned run in five innings. Rose also led the team at the plate, going 3 for 4 with four RBIs and two doubles while Dylan Bernstein was 2 for 3 with an RBI and a triple. Sam Berkner added an RBI and three runs scored while Ryan Hoffmann had a hit, an RBI and a run scored.
GFW travels to Sibley East on Tuesday.
